On April 20th 2018, a roundtable discussion on accounting education and certification was hosted at the World Bank office in Baku. Over 20 participants represented a range of stakeholders including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Taxation, Professional Accountancy Organizations and Universities, the Chamber of Auditors, and representatives of business and industry. Representatives for Azerbaijan on the STAREP Education Community of Practice were all present.
The roundtable follows the 1.5 day workshop held in November 2017, which involved a larger audience and aimed at sharing best practices in accounting education reforms.

The roundtable enabled the participants to engage in detailed discussions on the challenges encountered in past initiatives, and the lessons that could be learned for future reforms. Even though participants held different views, a consensus emerged on a number of topics, including:
- The need for University lecturers and other trainers to update their knowledge and skills in accounting, auditing, and related subjects.
- The lack of current textbooks and other resources based on international accounting and auditing standards in Azeri.
- The importance of building connections and creating a dialogue between the different stakeholders to ensure a linkage between University Degree Programs and Professional Certification Programs, as well as the relevance of the knowledge and skills acquired by University graduates and certified professionals to the job market.
- The requirement for Universities to obtain sufficient autonomy in setting the curriculum for their undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
- The necessary linkages that need to be established between University and Professional Programs with internationally recognized Certification Programs.
Members of the roundtable agreed to remain available as required during the process of development of a national strategy for the reform of accounting education in Azerbaijan.
